Each woman is unique in the feelings she experiences after an abortion. We find that the majority of women choose to have an abortion following much consideration. The choice is made because it is the best possible option within complex personal circumstances.

Even so, it is common afterward for women to feel confused, upset and doubtful, even when they are relieved and even when they feel that on balance the decision was right for them. Women’s partners, friends and family members may also be confused and upset. Because of the secrecy and stigma often associated with having an abortion many may feel alone and isolated during and after the experience. Remember, though, that more than 5000 women travel abroad from Ireland each year for the purpose of having an abortion.

Pact’s professional post-abortion service offers free support and counselling, without bias or judgement, to anyone affected by the experience of abortion.

For information on free post-abortion medical check-ups, which are advisable 2-3 weeks following an abortion, visit www.abortionaftercare.ie/post-abortion-medical-check-up.php.
